There are many people who have come to hear the word "fascia" since around last year. I asked about the relationship between the neck stiffness and the fascia to professor Hitoshi Takei who has advocated that it is important to release (relax) the fascia for the stiffness of the body since 1995.

There are various causes of shoulder & neck stiffness such as Poor posture, muscle strain due to using specific muscle too much, how to use balanced biased muscles, wrong exercise, stress etc., but common causes among many people are poor posture and balanced biased muscle usage. The round shoulders (not only the head appearing before the body but also the chin protruding forward) not only strain the muscles from the neck to the shoulder excessively, but also brings the sagging in the face and neck wrinkles due to pulled downwards skin caused by the protruding forward chin.

Also, attitudes and actions of daily life have little movement using the body uniformly on the left and right. That's why the weight tends to be biased either to the left or right, or to the front and back. If this bias is accumulated for 5 years and 10 years, fatigue of neck muscles supporting about 5 kg of head and muscles around the shoulder blades supporting about 8 kg of both arms is considerable. You can easily imagine that this fatigue causes stiffness and pain.


It is the fascia release that is effective for arranging the muscles and posture. The fascia is a membrane that encloses the muscle; the fascia is composed of Superficial Fascia in the subcutaneous tissue, Muscular Fascia covering the muscle, Epimysium on the muscle surface, Perimysium surrounding the bundle of muscles in the muscle, Endomysium  enveloping one muscle fiber in a bundle of muscles., made of collagen fibers and a small amount of elastin fibers.


The role of the fascia release is to restore the twisted fascia

When sitting in a chair the buttock crushes and spreads, and when rising up from the chair the butt returns to its original shape. This is due to Elastin, which can stretch and shrink like rubber, and regain its original shape when the force adding the body is gone, and Collagen which can change its shape like a hammock according to the movement of the body. Collagen and elastin are controlling tension added to the body.


Keeping in a bad posture or using unbalanced muscles twists the fascia and collagen and elastin gather at some of them. Then, the substrate enveloping collagen and elastin changes from an aqueous solution to a gelatinous solution. When becoming gelatinous, the muscles under the fascia can’t move freely, so twist spreads throughout the body through deep fascia. Since the fascia can’t unravel twisting on its own, proper posture and movement are limited.


It is the fascia release that restores this twist and allows the muscle to move correctly. Stretching means to stretch parallel muscle fibers in a certain direction, but fascial release is a way to relax in various directions. The fascia “removal” is strictly prohibited because it may damage the fascia and worsen twist.


Many patients visit under medical therapist, we will always listen care method that can be done at home in overseas.
